hooking up electric trailer brake on 99 gmc yukon, looking for easy access to cold side of stoplight switch ?
You could tap either the brake pedal switch, or the CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp). Do not tap on to one of the brake lamps (left or right) or your trailer brakes will pulse with your turn signals.
The GM trucks have a CHMSL wire pulled in the wire loom that runs from beneath the brake booster toward the rear of the vehicle (to the rear lights), and I assume that the SUVs would have the same wire. If I remember correctly it is a white wire with a blue tracer. (white w/ blue stripe). This would be the best to signal your brake controller.
You can use the cold-side of the brake pedal switch but you will have trailer brake pulsing when you turn on your hazard flashers. This isn't a big deal, you could reach down and turn down your brake controller on a long hill but it does suck. I'm not near my truck or I would tell you which wire is the one to tap on the brake pedal switch, but you can easily tell which one is the one needed by using a meter or test light and probing your brake pedal switch.
